Lyon has been an educator all his life, starting off with summer jobs, then working in pre-school before he got his Master’s Degree in Education from Portland State University. He taught in the Highline School District and the New York City Public schools before returning to the Northwest to teach at Lawton. His professional expertise and interests range from using mentor texts in writing workshop, to improving vocabulary instruction through base words, to problems solving in math, to safety at school. He has worked extensively in the Lawton Secret Garden with students, runs the Safety Patrol program for 5th graders and started/organizes the Walking School Bus program for Lawton. Lyon enjoys playing guitar, riding his multiple bikes, and running with his dog in Discovery Park. He lives in the Magnolia and has two children who have both attended Lawton since Kindergarten. Last year Lyon was selected as the Puget Sound ESD Regional Teacher of the Year.
