The PTA is bringing back Family Bingo Night at Lawton. Parents had their opportunity to win fabulous prizes at last weekend’s Casino Night, and now it’s time for the kids to have some fun too!

Not only can the kids win cool prizes at Bingo, so can their Moms, Dads, brothers and sisters. Prizes will also be awarded to kids and parents for best Rock Star hairdos and outfits.

Don’t be shy. Come early and enjoy a Rockin’ and Rollin’ $5.00 Pizza party at 6:00pm! And you can even add a ceasar salad to your slice for a mere $1 more! To top it off there will also be another great Bake Sale sponsored by our own Lawton parent bakers.

The Bingo games will begin after 6:30pm. And they’ll be called by our new principal Kathy Bledsoe. She’s really looking forward to meeting the Lawton community. You won’t want to miss out on the popular family Bingo night!

But I can’t do all this on my own. In order to pull off this fantastic night of Rock Star Bingo, I need some fabulous volunteers to work for a part of the night.

I am looking for help with the following tasks:

4:30-6:00pm — Set Up Crew
5:45-6:15pm — Direct traffic to park on the playground
6:00-7:00pm — Hand out Bingo cards
6:00-7:00pm — Cashier for dinner and drinks
7:00-8:00pm — Cashier for dinner and drinks(light sales)
6:00-7:00pm — Serve food (pizza, salad and drink)
7:00-8:00pm — Serve food/clean up food area
8:00-8:30pm — Clean up crew

Building Leadership Team Needs New Members

Building Leadership Team (BLT) Needs Team Members for 2010/2011 School Year.

Parent representatives are needed to serve for the 2010-11 school year on the BLT. This group is charged with collaborative decision making among staff and parents on issues such as budget development, academic achievement planning and professional development. It is a representative model with equal numbers of parents and staff members.

The BLT needs three parent members, each serving a two-year term.

If you are interested in applying for a position, you are committing yourself to one monthly meeting with a possible extra meeting when issues arrive that need to be resolved.

Applications must be submitted to the school office by 3:30pm on March 26 (or via e-mail to Bev Clonch at clonch@aol.com), and include a letter indicating:

The grade your student(s) will be in next school year and if they are Spectrum or Special Needs.
School involvement such as volunteer activities.
Your understanding of consensus decision making.
How you will advocate for the interests of the group of parents you wish to represent while supporting all Lawton students.

Safety Committee Meetings

The Lawton Safety Committee is committed to maintaining a safe environment in our school, as safety is a high priority for everyone. The Committee is now meeting monthly, and an agenda is prepared during the month of the meeting. Agenda items may be sent to any member of the team and will be forwarded to Elizabeth Hensley (Chair) or Kathy Bledsoe (Principal) to be placed on the agenda. Final Kindergarten Tour – March 24th

Wizard of Oz at Lawton Friday, March 19th!

Come see a special performance of The Wizard of Oz on Friday, March 19th at 6:00 p.m. at the Lawton Elementary School Commons. There will be Kindergarten Munchkins, 3rd to 5th grade Flying Monkeys, an evil witch, a good witch and
all of your favorite characters (Toto too!) in a school production of this well loved classic. Doors open at 5:30 with a Wizard of Oz themed bake sale at Intermission.

Math Night – Tues. 2/25 6-8 pm

Lawton Elementary’s Math Night is Thursday, February 25th from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Math Night is meant to get kids excited by and further their interest in math. The fun includes math games, a Math Olympiad for 4th and 5th grade students, and new this year - Applied Math with interactive displays/presentations of how math is used in various professions and everyday life. Blue Highway Games will be there to sell games (a percentage of the proceeds goes to Lawton PTA)

Debate Club for 4th & 5th Graders

Spring session is open to new AND returning debaters! Developed and run by Successful Schools in Action, this program at Blaine, Coe, Lawton, and John Hay schools helps kids improve their public speaking, writing, note taking, and critical thinking skills. We welcome kids who want to give it a try!

· Taught by elementary school teachers, trained in debate

· Meet after school once a week for 12 weeks, starting mid-February

· Students develop both affirmative and negative arguments about a topic related to kids!

· A cross-school tournament will be held in May

Tuition is $120, and a limited number of scholarships are available. Online registration will open Feb. 1^st at www.schoolsinaction.org. There is space at each school for 12 participants. Questions?
