Advanced Learning

Spectrum Program
Lawton is the designated Spectrum school for the Queen Anne/Magnolia cluster, and Lawton’s teachers are trained to challenge the advanced learners who have successfully tested into this program. Spectrum students receive accelerated curricula that are generally one level above their grade.

Spectrum is part of the Advanced Learning program offered through the Seattle Public Schools to students in grades 1 through 8 who are identified as gifted (90+ percentile range in cognitive ability and reading and math achievement at or near the 87th percentile). Students who meet these criteria learn at an accelerated pace, working toward subject area standards that are above their grade level. Spectrum’s primary goal, according to the Advanced Learning Department, is to: Use a self-contained delivery model with differentiated instruction at an accelerated pace, with rigorous standards-based curriculum that prsents learning at a pace, depth and intensity that meets students’ intellectual needs and motivational levels.

Typically, Spectrum students are expected to:

  • Demonstrate mastery of Grade Level Expectations (GLEs) in all areas.
  • Work toward mastery of GLEs beyond current grade level in reading and mathematics.

To address the learning styles, learning paces, and curricular needs of highly capable children, Spectrum-designated schools have been assigned to various regions and neighborhoods throughout the District. At Lawton Elementary, we are very proud to have the Spectrum designation within the Queen Anne/Magnolia cluster of schools. We were chosen for many reasons; one important distinction is the number of Spectrum-endorsed teachers we have on staff. They receive differentiated instruction from a teacher who is well qualified to teach in a multi-age classroom, as well as grade-level math groups doing a dedicated math block. Lawton students have thrived in these settings throughout the school’s history. In a recent data study, we discovered that our Spectrum students show more than adequate yearly process. We are very proud of our accomplishments.
