From the Office of Public Affairs
Important calendar days for Seattle Public Schools – such as First Day of School, Winter and Spring Breaks, Professional Development Days, holiday breaks, and Last Day of School – are negotiated between the Seattle School District and the Seattle Education Association (SEA).
The School District and SEA will likely start negotiations on the 2013-14 school year calendar dates in early 2013. The School Board usually votes to approve the calendars sometime in April or May, depending on the progress of the negotiations.
The final 2013-14 School Calendar will be posted on the District website and a news release will be sent out to families, staff, media and the community as soon as the Board approves the calendar.
Memorial Day Weekend Changes:
The Memorial Day Weekend will be 4 days in 2013. In an effort to minimize disruption to instructional time, the 2012-13 Academic Calendar included two changes:
- Shortening of the mid-Winter break from a full week to a 4-day weekend
- and an extra day of closure on the Friday before Memorial Day.
More information about the development of the calendar is available on the Board Action Report [pdf] for this item.
